What Does the Easter Bunny Have to Do With Jesus?

Do the Easter Bunny and Jesus have a connection?  Actually, some say not at all. All Easter decorations like eggs, bunnies, and fluffy yellow chicks wearing gardening hats have pagan origins. Apart from the Christian custom of commemorating the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead, they were incorporated into the Easter celebration.

However, there are histories of Early Christians likening the Egg and Empty Shell to the Birth and Resurrection of Christ (see below).

Easter Bunny and Jesus

The association between the Easter Bunny and Jesus may seem quite puzzling at first. However, this seemingly odd combination might have deeper roots than we realize. Many believe that the Easter Bunny actually originated from a pagan fertility symbol, representing new life and rebirth—concepts that also align with the resurrection of Jesus in Christian belief. This overlap led to the assimilation of the Easter Bunny into modern Easter celebrations, merging ancient traditions with religious significance.

In addition, some people view the act of egg-hunting as symbolic of searching for Jesus’ empty tomb—an essential element in celebrating his resurrection. The eggs themselves can also be seen as representing new life and hope, fitting harmoniously into the broader message of Easter. Ultimately, while it might appear unconventional on the surface, exploring these historical connections sheds light on how various traditions have coalesced to form our modern celebration of Easter.  So , yes it seems as though the Easter Bunny and Jesus are connected in this sense.

Easter Bunny Origin

what does the Easter Bunny have to do with JesusSome versions claim that German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought their custom of an egg-laying hare known as “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws” brought the Easter rabbit to America for the first time in the 1700s. Their young ones built nests for this species to lay its colorful eggs in.  Thanks much to these ‘volk’ (rhymes with ‘yoke’, get it 🙂 .

Even earlier, in Medieval times, there was a forest spirit named Oester (from which Easter is derived) who at pagan celebrations would change animals into different animals.  One time she turned a bird into a bunny, and as it was related to a bird, it could still lay eggs.  Go figure!  Anyways, that might be the precursor to the Osterhase.
